Herion Park Bio and Statement
Herion’s artistic interests and thematic passions are varied but, when reduced to the essential, her art expresses love, loss and desire; Love for life and the force within us; Loss of the ability to reach or commune with the aspects of that force, because of death or distance, or the happenstances of birth; Desire to be one with humanity.
She teaches in the Fashion department at Miami Dade College during Fall and Spring semesters and at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago during Summers. As a teacher and especially in Miami, She has met many young people who have stories of struggle in their history. The community college is the launching place for many first and second generation immigrants. Knowing that route empirically and intrinsically she is compelled by their stories and imagery describing and recounting their attempts and successes and sometimes setbacks at finding refuge in this country.
Herion is an immigrant and first generation naturalized Korean/American citizen. Even though her story did not involve such stark circumstances endured by many, she’s uniquely aware and empathetic for their loss and finds joy personally in their successes. Her work is unescapedly informed by the immigrant experience.
